The Three Martini Playdate

Once upon a time, I belonged to a Book Club.  We met once a month to discuss the book we all read and drink some wine.  We read classics like To Kill a Mockingbird, trendy books like The Da Vinci Code, trashy books like The Nanny Diaries, and amazing books like Lovely Bones.

Now I sit on the couch (oh yes, laptop in lap) with American Idol on the tube.  (Side note: American Idol is perfect laptop television … takes zero brainpower and it totally entertaining.)  Anyway, here’s a book recommendation for ALL MOMS who want to read, but can’t find the time:  The Three Martini Playdate.  It’s more than a book filled with quick wit, subtle humor, and clever anecdotes.  It’s a mantra.

Seriously, this is a funny book that can be read one short chapter at a time.  There are some great tips that remind you that our kids are not going to break and it’s okay if we mess them up a bit. Here are some of my favorite chapters:

-          Your Cost-Efffective Tomboy

-          Screaming: Is it Necessary?

-          Diaper Bag or Steamer Truck?

-          Bedtime: Is 5:30 too early?

Happy reading!  It’s worth the time – and a chapter can be completed during the 5 minute window between crawling into bed and crashing to sleep.  It will inspire you to bust out the Grey Goose or SKYY at your next playdate.

Long Live Murphy Brown!

“West Wing” and “Will & Grace” are cancelled the same day?

Thank goodness for “Boston Legal” (too smart and funny to be laptop television) and “Scrubs” (perfect laptop television).  More James Spader, William Shatner and Candice Bergan!

Long live Murphy Brown …

Working Mom’s Reprieve

A working mom’s reprieve!  Jon and I just spent an amazing weekend with our friends in Orange County.  Our dear friend Dave turned 40, and we had a weekend to celebrate.  Here are the highlights:

-          Having a well-behaved kid on the plane to and from The OC.

-          Drinking margaritas on the beach at sunset in Newport. (And enjoying good guacamole to go with the margaritas.)

-          Riding the Ferris wheel on Balboa Island with my 3-year-old goddaughter; being amazed by her fearless laugher at the top of the ride.

-          Spending time with the coolest 4-year-old boy I have ever met.

-          Seeing Michele and Gino walk through the door.

-          Celebrating Dave’s 40th birthday with dinner, drinks and dancing.

-          Feeling old on Sunday morning after a night of dinner, drinks and dancing.

-          Hearing my engineer hubby say, “I’ve decided that I am a clubber!”  (Honey, we are too old and geeky to be clubbers.)

-          Fighting back tears as I experience Disneyland with my 15-month-old daughter.

-          Laughing as my “baby” wanted to ride the rides again and again.

-          Watching my daughter absorb the Disneyland 50th Anniversary parade.

-          Seeing my daughter in Minnie Mouse ears.  (Unbelievably cute!)

-          Gabbing with my girlfriends until 2:30 a.m.

-          Dirty Dancing with Dave.  (Oh, sadly, it’s true.)

-          Realizing I know all the words to “My Humps” … YIKES.

-          Getting a call on my cell phone from a friend who met Tom Cruise!

-          Three words: Orange Juice David.

-          Seeing “the happiest churro on earth.”

-          Knowing how lucky I am to have such wonderful friends, husband and daughter.

Welcome to Laptop Television

Welcome to Laptop Television.  This site is dedicated to all working moms who (once upon a time) enjoyed television, movies and random pop culture at-will. Now that we balance kids and work, the only time we get to watch television is while the kids are sleeping and we are typing away on our laptops.

This blog is a forum to discuss topics that allow us a break from our crazy lives and share the trials and tribulations of being working moms.
