Sorry for the poor formatting.  I tried over and over to fix it …

Olympics: My Favorite Yao

Olympics: Day Four

The Olympic Games bring out the proud American in me. I proudly support my country when American athletes compete.  But today, I must pay homage to a man who hails from

China

.

I heard the story of the pairs figure skating coach from

China

.  In all honesty, the story played on the television while I was getting the kid ready for bed, so I will do my best to recap with accuracy (corrections and more information are welcome):

  • Many years ago, a young man named

    Yao

was tapped to be the first figure skating pairs team to represent

    China

    .

  • Yao

was 20 years old; his partner was 12 years old.

  • The duo had to learn pairs figure skating from photos in magazines.

  • They attended their first world competition after only one month of training.

  • They had to travel by themselves; there was no budget for coaches to travel with them.

  • Yao

and his skating partner had never been out of China.

  • Their performance was not great.  They received last place.  The crowd laughed at them.

  • Years later,

    Yao

was chartered with building a reputable pairs figure skating program for

    China

, and he now serves as the head coach for his country.

Today:

  • China

won the silver and the bronze medals in the Olympics.

  • One of the bronze medalists recently recovered from a torn Achilles’ to win the medal.

  • The silver medalist team overcame a major fall to win the medal.

I admire

Yao

’s dedication to his sport.  I admire his strength to build a program that would bring great pride to his country.

Olympics: Michelle’s Graceful Exit

Olympics: Day Three

Spent the day doing mommy-things like laundry, grocery store, taking my kid to a 2-year-old’s birthday party.  But, here is news from the Olympics.

  • Michelle Kwan withdraws from the figure skating competition. (Ends her career gracefully, throws support to Sasha, Kimmie and Emily.)
  • Adorable and athletic Emily Hughes fills the spot. (I honestly think she will shine!)
  • Kwan turns down an offer to sit in the NBC broadcast booth.  (Smart move… and the career opportunities are far from gone.)
  • Overall medal count is here.

Okay, back to work… with Desperate Housewives on the tube and the laptop on my lap! I have a product launch plan to write.

Olympics: Primo Laptop Television

The Olympics are here.  Primo Laptop Television!  I will be posting on the Olympics as I watch hour after hour after hour.  Case in point: It’s Friday night, kid is in bed, hubby is working, and I am blogging about the opening ceremonies.  (Sad? Yes.)

Day One: Opening Ceremonies

·         Did I really hear the Rocky theme playing in Torino?

·         The ceremony is beautifully and artistically staged.

·         Countries enter in Italian alphabetical order – bellissimo!

·         Why the hell are they playing DISCO music?  Are you kidding me?  Gloria Gaynor and The Village People?  Italian music is beautiful … play it!

·         The poor dude from Albania is all by himself!

·         I want the nickname “The Speeding White Sausage.”

·         I missed a few countries … getting a glass of red wine.  (Opening ceremonies are not Tivo-worthy.)

·         Very cool how the athletes hold digital video cameras to record their experience and then beam it back to their homeland.

·         NO ONE FROM MEXICO?

·         OMGThe Buggles?

·         I really, really want Michelle Kwan to win gold.

·         Okay, now I want to be called “The Flying Tomato.”

·         When did the opening ceremony become so freaky and over-done? This is too long… even for laptop television.

The Lion King

The extreme opposite of Laptop Television is musical theater.  While I like Laptop Television enough to blog about it, of big piece of my heart belongs to musical theater.  Well, I should say my heart belonged to musical theater… my daughter now has my heart (and therefore my budget for theater tickets.)

Regardless, my husband and I were lucky enough to see the touring company of The Lion King this week in San Jose.  We both saw the show in Toronto (same theater, different trips and not together), so this was an opportunity to see the spectacle together.  The production did not disappoint.  Here are my long-lasting impressions:

-          Without a doubt, The Lion King is most CREATIVE thing I have ever witnessed.

-          The show is an experience filled with magnificent costumes, brilliant music, quick humor and creative staging.

-          I have a great appreciation for African music, dancing and instruments.

-          Director Julie Taymor is a genius.  No doubt about it.

-          The opening and closing numbers bring tears to my eyes.

-          This is an ideal venue for introducing young children to live theater to show them what real musical talent can produce.  (Yes, there are people who can sing better than Britney and Hilary.)

If you have not seen the show, I highly encourage you to experience it. If you have kids aged 5 years or older – take them. Experience the beauty, the grandeur and the imagination that The Lion King brings to the stage.

Hakuna Matata!

Best Rock Album

Ugh — I should have watched The Grammys afterall.  That is great laptop television, especially when one of my favorite bands walks away with five awards.

If you don’t own "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" … head on over to iTunes and buy it.

Poll: Most Americans fear Oprah

Take a look at this study published in today’s JWR:

A new survey commissioned by Davis Logsdon at the University of Minnesota ("The U") reveals that a majority of Americans now name talk show host Oprah Winfrey as their number one fear, eclipsing such other concerns as unemployment, terrorism, and global warming.

And here’s the good stuff:

The poll results bear out anecdotal evidence provided by mental health professionals across the country, many of whom say that in the days immediately following Ms. Winfrey’s fire-breathing encounter with author James Frey the number of patients complaining of Oprah-related trauma has soared.

And here’s the best part:

In Chicago, Ms. Oprah’s production company released the following official response to Mr. Logsdon’s comments: "Mr. Logsdon took the name of Oprah in vain and for that, Oprah shall smite him."

Oprah makes this communications consultant and pop culture junkie PROUD.

Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl is not laptop television.  It’s usually hang-out-and-gab-with-your-friends-while-you-drink-beer television.  This year was a different story… it was most certainly laptop television, only instead of a PC it was a sick kid on my lap.  (Sick kid, books, blankets, stuffed animals and crackers)

So, I saw a much as I could and have decided to change my last name to Jurevicius because it sounds cool.  Most importantly, I was able to catch some of the commercials (my favorite part of the game when neither team trips my trigger.) Here are my favorites:

-          Pepsi: Brown and Bubbly (loved Jay Mohr in his Jerry Maguire-esque role)

-          Aleve: Leonard Nemoy at the Star Trek convention (and I am the farthest thing from a Trekkie)

-          Dove: Women and parents of girls should support the Dove Self Esteem Fund.

-          Ford: who doesn’t love Kermit promoting a hybrid car? (but I actually liked the part where they turned the blue Ford logo green)

-     Bud Lite: Clean the gutters!

-          TOM: Mission Impossible: III looks pretty good.
