Cut out late night Internet and TV?

… but then there would be no Laptop Television! This is blasphemy!  ;-)

Check out this Reuters story telling sleepy Americans to stop spending the late-night hours in front of the tube and the Internet.  Then put yourself in my shoes… late night is the *only time* I actually have to sit on the couch and watch TV. Yes, I also am working and doing laundry and washing dishes and blogging and online shopping…

“Hairspray” has staying power

LTV is proud to feature another guest-blogger, my friend and colleague (and super-cool chica) Stefanie Penland.  Stef and I share a love for musicals (both on-stage and on-screen), so I asked her to share some thoughts on the blockbuster hit Hairspray.  Plus, we all know Mommies with 2-year-olds don’t get to see movies in the theater.  (It’s also worth noting that Stef wrote wrote this review while I was out of town, so I am late in posting her review.)  Regardless, enjoy!

I
hadn’t read many reviews about director Adam Shankman’s take on the Tony
award-winning Broadway musical, so when I went to the theater last Thursday
night excited about four things only: John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer,
Queen Latifah, and
Broadway tunes.  For the Broadway-loving, celebrity-obsessed individual
that I am, that’s all I needed to know to be game.

But
when Tracy Turnblad (played by newcomer Nikky Blonsky) is all
smiles as she belts out “Good Morning Baltimore” in the first five minutes of the
film, the rest of the movie was no longer solely about seeing Travolta in drag
or checking out how amazing Pfeiffer looks after her five-year break from the
silver screen… It was about this charismatic, determined girl’s journey towards
achieving her dream – and the charming and heart warming story of the
experience.  Clearly, a cheesy takeaway, but I was utterly hooked.
Occasionally, I would sort of become aware of my surroundings and realize that
I was literally smiling throughout the entire movie!  My cheeks were a
little sore, even.

Because
I hadn’t seen the
play on Broadway
, I wasn’t exactly familiar with its overall message going
into it.  As Tracy paves her way to stardom on the local variety program,
the Corny Collins Show, she starts to enact real change as she stands up for
the individuals who participate on the show’s “Negro Day” and raises awareness
of the importance of seeing past racial differences.  By the movie’s end,
the Corny Collins Show features a huge, “integrated” song and dance number to
showcase her small steps towards a change for the better.

A
lighter-hearted – but just as important – takeaway is that Travolta as Tracy’s
mom, Edna Turnblad, is almost better looking as a woman than he is a man.
A flawless portrayal of a woman, rather than the traditional
man-playing-a-woman.

And
yes… the next morning, I was literally singing “Good Morning Baltimore” to
myself during the car ride into work.  Talk about staying power.

LTV Headlines

Here are the headlines keeping my attention:

Shawn Johnson Takes Nationals

Shawn_1

Today was a dream come true for this 3X year old woman. I trekked down to San Jose, CA to watch the Visa US Gymnastics Championships with my daughter and dear friend Michelle.

I have been a gymnastics fan since I was 5 years old, and today was the first time I have been this level of gymnastics in-person.  Simply put, it took my breath away. Here are highlights from this fantastic evening:

– Seeing my hometown girl, Shawn Johnson, win the title. (Seriously, she is amazing and fearless, and my money is on Beijing 2008!)
– Watching Nastia Liukin perform with grace and elegance, even with bad ankles.
– Admiring Alicia Sacramone’s maturity and power on the floor and beam.
– Discovering new talent, feeling hopeful for the 2008 Summer Olympics
– Hearing my 2-year-old say "Mommy, that girl is on the balance beam!"
– Remembering why I love this sport so much.

Sabra Can Dance!

Sabra

Best legs on TV, and now the SYTYCD Season 3 Champ!

Congrats, Sabra.  You are a brilliant dancer.

This really was a fantastic season, so much talent on the stage.

And I love a show that brings dance to the masses.

Can’t wait until Season 4!

I’m back!

Yes, I have been MIA.  My dad died recently, so I have been distracted with things more important than blogging.  Life is returning to normal, which means I have been playing with my kid, working, watching a little TV and finally blogging.

Here’s what keeping my short attention span these days:

  • Pasha and Lauren leave SYTYCD.  I hate to brag, but I predicted that one.  I think this week’s finale is really between Danny and Lacy.  Hmmm, my gut says Danny will win.  I’ll make a stronger prediction after this Wednesday’s show.
  • Sara leaves Top Chef.  I used to like her, but she was so whiny this week.  And the show’s producers obviously like keeping Howie around for conflict and entertainment.
  • Big Love is better than ever. Now that I am caught up, this season is fantastic. And I just discovered it’s moving to Sunday night (the old Sopranos slot?)
  • Jon Stewart is the funniest guy on TV. Late (and sleepless) nights finally have an upside… Jon is pure entertainment.
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Yes, 12+ hours of plane and airport time is plenty of time to read (and enjoy) the best Harry Potter book in the series.  I always loved book number four, but the seventh (and last) Potter book is simply the best. I could not put it down and did not want it to end.  Simply awesome.

That’s about it… I should be back in action fairly quickly.

Anyone know when Project Runway starts???
