See you at BlogHer 09

BlogHer 09 in Chicago

I’m leaving on a jet plane… and heading to Chicago for BlogHer 2009.  Here’s why I’m going this year:

1. Seeing the bloggers I love. [Smart, cool women from all over the world. I'm especially looking forward to seeing the ladies from Silicon Valley Moms Group.]

2. Meeting the bloggers I read regularly. [Can't wait to stalk meet the uber-smart writers on my blogroll. Look out, Role Mommy, I'm gonna track you down!]

3. Working with SmartyCard. [Yep, my client SmartyCard will be there in full force, signing up bloggers for their affiliate program. Yes, you can make money with your blog.]

4. Enjoying cocktails with the Yahoo! Mother Board. [Yes, my client Yahoo! will be there, as will their brand ambassadors, complete with video cameras and cocktails.]

5. Finding Tim Gunn and Rick Bayless. [I didn't know they were making appearances when I signed up, but that doesn't mean I can't stalk try to meet them too!]

6. Attending the sessions. [Believe it or not, I do want to attend the sessions and learn a thing or two. The session that has my eye is Day Two keynote: Traditional Media Chops meets a New Media Calling.]

7. Representing Voce Nation. [I work with bloggers who are more clever and widely read than LTV Mom, including Media Guerrilla, TV Through Glasses and Hyku.  So I will proudly represent Voce, share some live-Tweets, and do my thang.]

Hope to see you there!

What do BlogHer and Project Runway have in common?

Tim Gunn

Tim Gunn

Q: What do Project Runway and BlogHer have in common?

A: Tim Gunn!

I was in laptop-television heaven this week for two reasons, and I owe my thanks to Tim:

Project Runway on Lifetime

The beginning of the week, I discovered the that Lifetime has launched the new Web site for Project Runway Season 6! If you are a loyal fan of Heidi and Tim, you know that the show has moved from Bravo to Lifetime. It’s a big move, and I am anxious to see how the show evolves, remains (or not).  Check out the new show — which premiers August 20 — on Lifetime.  And remember, if your DVR is set for the show on Bravo, you need to reschedule for Lifetime.  (The season pass will not move networks.)

If you need more Project Runway, you can read the blog, the Facebook page, or the Twitter feed.

Tide and Tim Gunn want to know: “What are you Wearing to BlogHer 09?”  Yes, Tim Gunn is making an appearance at this year’s BlogHer, and you even have the chance to win a personal fashion consultation.  The rules, as well as Tim’s packing tips, can be found HERE.

I am supposed to post a photo of what I am wearing to BlogHer in order to win the consultation. I tell you what, a photo of my clothes (jeans, shirt, BlogHer bag from 2007) is just too boring to share!  My look is certainly NOT “a lot of look,” it’s actually quite lame.  So, since “this worries me,” I guess I will have to stop by the Tide booth at BlogHer and try to meet Tim. In other words, I will “make it work!”

SuperWhy is SuperWonderful

SuperWhy on PBS

SuperWhy on PBS

I grew up watching PBS television.  In fact, I vividly remember watching Sesame Street and Electric Company in my family room at home. Oddly enough, and much to my chagrin, my daughter was never into Sesame Street unless Elmo was on the screen.  But once she outgrew Elmo, we happily discovered Word World and then SuperWhy.

My kid did not watch lots of television as young toddler, but we did allow her to watch these select shows.  Looking back, it strikes me that I never questioned the quality or integrity of Word World or SuperWhy; I just trusted PBS to develop a product that was appropriate for kids.  In fact, to this day, PBS is the only network I turn on, walk away from the television, and know my daughter is watching a “safe” program.  (Before anyone asks, I usually walk away to cook dinner, wash clothes or another one of my domestic duties.)

Recently, the moms of Silicon Valley Moms Blog were invited to a special evening with the creators of SuperWhy. I tell you what, I have a whole new level of respect for the show and the brilliant *mothers* behind the educational and creative content. Here’s a snapshot of what we learned about PBS and SuperWhy programming:

  • PBS does not view kids as consumers, rather as “citizens of learning.”
  • There are more than 60 drafts of each 30-minute episode.
  • SuperWhy is designed to teach kids word strategies, and each character teaches a different critical reading skill.
  • Each episode of SuperWhy is designed to teach learning through problem-solving; in fact, “it’s not just memorizing, we want the kids to learn what we are trying to teach them.”
  • Whyatt Beanstalk is the preschool version of Zac Efron.
  • SuperWhy was created because “words don’t have power until we read them; we can change a story by changing the words.”
  • Media is a powerful force on kids; when Fonzie took out a library card, teen ownership of library cards grew by 500 percent.

Did you also know:

  • PBS wants to build relationships with parents, the goal is to develop “partners” with PBS programming.
  • SuperWhy has created reading camps to inspire kids to love reading and books.
  • PBS Kids has created online games to reinforce learning from all SuperWhy episodes.
  • There also is an online “Child Development Tracker” to help parents develop customized at-home activities for kids of all ages.

The folks from PBS also took the opportunity to ask the room of mom-bloggers what kind of tools and resources we could use to help extend learning from the television into our homes:

  • How can PBS supplement your child’s learning with SuperWhy?  Workbooks? Downloadable content?
  • They also sent us home with workbooks and resources to encourage summer reading.

If you have ideas or feedback to help PBS and parents work together, the folks at PBS are readily available. Here are Twitter handles: PBS Parents, Jeannine Harvey, Kevin Dando, Stephanie Aaronson, and Angela Santomero.
