Shelly -- I couldn't agree with you more. The impact of poverty on education is undeniable and oftentimes does not receive enough attention from politicians, voters, and everyday folks who may have a neighbor, friend, colleague or relative who is struggling economically. It is maddening that education and socio-economic status are so closely linked.

I think everyone has made important and meaningful points. However, the one area that poverty greatly impacts, which is often overlooked, is education. I recommend reading Poverty and Schooling in the U.S.: Contexts and Consequences by Sue Books. It is very eye-opening to the influences of poverty on students' learning and overall educational experiences. I think this book also demonstrates how far-reaching an economic recession can be. Even though this book was published in 2004, the message is very current.

What was really great about that phone call was learning just how eager people are to help. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

I recently moved to San Francisco, and did not realize the full effects of what was going on in the economy besides its effects on my life, until my relocation. I have visibly noticed, with sadness, the lines that are consistently growing longer at community shelters, housing complexes, and charity organizations, as well as the growth of of families amongst the sullen faces. I am in full support of organizations, such as Shelter Network. Not only are they giving these people nourishment and a place to sleep, but the community's ideals and teachings provide the homeless and hurting with something to work towards, look forward to, and overall see their value as a person, employee, and parent to those children affected by the recession once again.

Our current economic climate is difficult for everyone, especially our children. Just as Jeanne wrote, I know someone who committed suicide this past year too, leaving behind five children. It's awful to think that someone could be feeling that horrible about their life and economic situation that they'd decide to choose to end it.

Places like the Shelter Network where families can be together are few and far between, and I hope that, especially in this current economic situation, that we all begin to understand more clearly how truly important family is in our lives.

Additionally, I have express my tremendous concern for our education system. With states (like California) cutting budgets, it seems like education is the first one to go. Last night on the news, they were debating the San Jose Mounted Horse Unit, which is one of the oldest in the country, I believe they said. Just like a lot of people, I would hate to see it go, but I'm not sure why we are choosing horses over educating our children and taking care of families in need.

Recently a friends husband commited suicide and we have felt that it must have been related to his inability to find work. He left behind a son age 11 and a daughter age 6 as well as a devoted wife. It was a shock to me that people I know were in this kind of situation. What really hit me most about this event was the fact that these kids will grow up without a Father and that he felt such despair that he took his own life. Even though I listen to the news and read the papers nothing hit home about the economy as did this tragedy.

The children are tragic victims of our current economic situation. My son had a homeless child in his Kindergarten class last year. The school would make sure that he washed up each morning when he arrived and that he had a nutritional breakfast and lunch, but with our state budget situation, how long can the schools continue? I’ve seen Shelter Networks in action and I wonder why their success isn’t duplicated in communities across our country. I’m sure most of America is unaware of the numbers of children that are now homeless and I commend Katie Couric for bringing this issue to light. Thanks for sharing LTV Mom!
