So You Think You Can Dance?

My new summertime guilty pleasure.  Boston Legal, 24, Sopranos, Big Love and American Idol are nowhere to be found… so can you blame me?  Plus, it’s great laptop television because it requires zero brainpower.  (And I like learning about new types and styles of dances.)  All that said, here is my inaugural recap of So You Think You Can Dance?.

There are 18 people competing in a dance contest, and they have been randomly paired into 9 dance couples. Each week, the couples draw a dance style out of a hat and learn a routine based on that style.  They perform in front of an auditorium and are critiqued by a panel of expert judges.  The public votes, a couple is kicked off each week.  (In short, it’s American Idol for dancers.)

Here are the nice dances this week and my random opinions:

  • Krumping: And how is this not hip hop?  Choreographer Lil C says “I am the co-inventor of Krump.”  Clearly this white girl needs an explanation…
  • Fox Trot: “Why don’t you do right?” by Sinead O’Connor is a cool and sexy song.
  • Hip Hop: The “two goofy white kids” did a good job.  I didn’t like the music though.
  • Samba: I just liked seeing Demitri with his shirt off.  ;-)   Who knew you could Samba to the Black Eyed Peas?
  • Contemporary:  Pretty cool.  Natalie is my favorite female dancer.
  • Pop: I think we call this “soda” in California.  Boring routine, but the Kelly Clarkson song is one of my guilty pleasures.
  • American Jive: I wanted Ashley to leave last week, but the dude is cute in a dorky way.
  • Hip Hop: The one judge said “you dance like a white girl.”  Um, what’s wrong with that?
  • Cha Cha:  Sexy.

Who will get voted off the island?  Either the Pop couple or the Jive couple.  My two cents.
