BlogHer Food 2009

I’m obviously not a food blogger, but I love to write about (and watch) food television.  I’m a long-time fan of shows like Top Chef, Chopped and Next Food Network Star. Recently, I’ve been sucked into the cake decorating shows, and Cake Boss is a fan-favorite in my house.

I admittedly watch a lot of television after the kid goes to bed and I go back to work (hence the moniker Laptop TV Mom).  But during waking hours, we limit TV-time in my house. My young daughter is allowed to watch cartoons during breakfast, but then has to “earn” TV time for her favorites like iCarly. But let’s be honest, there are times when this mama just wants to cuddle on the couch with her special girl, and chill with some TV. The challenge is finding TV that we both want to watch. And this is where cooking shows come in.

My 4.5 year-old daughter and I love to watch cooking shows together. We spend the time talking about the mystery ingredients, the decorations on the cakes, and which recipes we would eat for dinner. We can watch these shows, and I know there will be no sex, drugs and bad language. (Well, some of the shows have bad language, but I can usually work around a bleeped-out F-bomb.)

All that said, I’m also a closet foodie who loves to cook (and eat). I love cookbooks, entertaining, and experiencing new and exciting restaurants.

So, absorb all that information — and couple it with BlogHer Food 09 in San Francisco — and you have LTV Mom attending the upcoming conference for food bloggers. I am meeting up with cookbook author Gina von Esmarch, and we are going to see cooking demonstrations, learn about food photography, and meet the food bloggers we love to read.

But my favorite part? I am bringing my kid with me!  My hubby is out of town, so the kid and I are hitting Highway 280 and joining the foodies in  San Francisco. She says she wants to drink milk and watch people cook. (I told her the California Milk Board will be there, and milk is her absolute favorite drink!)

So, if you see a TV blogger (and closet foodie) with her super-cute kid, please say hello!

“Top Chef Masters” Finale

Celebrity Chef Rick Bayless and LTV Mom

Celebrity Chef Rick Bayless and LTV Mom

Even this long-time fan of Top Chef was dubious when I heard there would be a “celebrity Chef” version called Top Chef Masters. The Top Chef series makes for great laptop television, so I tuned in while I worked and blogged. Well, I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the show.  Like all good reality TV, the competition started with 24 Top Chefs and whittled its way down to the final three Chefs. The winner will be named this week on Wednesday, August 20 on Bravo.

I am happy to say that two of my all-time favorite Chefs are in the finale. Here are the finalists and why I admire them (or at least want to eat their food):

1. Rick Bayless — Frontera Grill

I love Rick Bayless because he cooks the kind of food that I want to make for my family and friends.  His fresh approach to Mexican food combines delicious whole foods in a simple, easy and delicious way.

As you can tell from the photo above, I recently met Rick Bayless at BlogHer 09 in Chicago. He was hosting cooking demonstration for the National Pork Board. He made a Chamoy-marinated pork tenderloin with mango salsa. (Visit “This Mama Cooks” for the recipe.) I was so excited to see him cook that I showed up 20 minutes before his presentation began to get a good spot. Well, I did get a good spot even though I felt awkwardly stalker-ish and tried to look busy while Rick prepared his cooking station.

Rick was so nice and humble… and even seemed shy. He kindly posed for photographs and signed autographs.  Rick signed one of his recipe cards for my sister (who ADORES Rick), and she is framing the autograph to hang in her kitchen. Of course, if I had been more organized, I would have bought some of Rick’s cookbooks to have him sigh them. Oh well… I’ll have to settle for watching him in the Top Chef Masters finale!

If you are a fan of Top Chef Finale and Rick Bayless, check out Root 4 Rick! Rick is competing for the Frontera Farmers Foundation.

2. Hubert Keller – Fleur de Lys

I love Hubert Keller because he cooks the kind of food I *wish* I could make for special occasions with my husband.  His food appears elegant, refined and sophisticated.

I always gravitate to Chef with restaurants in San Francisco because I like to support the food scene in my backyard. But I really fell in love with Hubert’s manner, tone and style. He just seems so refined. And let’s not forget that Hubert Keller also has an entire cookbook dedicated to hamburgers! (Be still, my beating heart!)

Hubert is competing on Top Chef Masters to win money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. (And I have requested my husband makes reservations for dinner at Fleur de Lys for my birthday.)

3. Michael Chiarello — Bottega

Of course, there is one more Chef in the finale, and he is Michael Chiarello from Napa Valley’s Bottega Restaurant.  I love the fact that Michael is competing for the Clinic Ole Foundation to help Napa Valley’s migrant workers (the backbone of California wine country). Michael has moxie, attitude and good food. But I just want to say to him: “What is my name? And who I am to you?” (Sorry, couldn’t resist!)

At the end of the day, support the Chef or charity that appeals to you and watch Bravo on Wednesday night to see who wins!

Twitter is affecting my blog!

This has been an amazingly busy Spring, and Summer looks even busier. As a result, I have been working late nights and watching lots of “Laptop Television.”

Oddly enough, and perhaps it’s the endless deadlines that are my life, I find myself doing most of my commentary on Twitter instead of my blog. So, here’s a quick snapshot of what I’m watching these days and some of my favorite Twitter comments:

So You Think You Can Dance

@StacyLibby I hate, hate, hate lip-syncing. Instant fast-forward. #sytycd

@glennia @StacyLibby: I like Kayla, too. She looks 10 feet tall when she dances. #sytycd

@glennia I think Paula Abdul must have shared her stash with Lil C, because he is no longer coherent. #sytycd

@CityMama love Kupono’s slight pidgin-hawaiian accent . Makes me feel at home. #sytycd

Top Chef Masters

@StacyLibby The writers of LOST talk about Top Chef in their Thurs. a.m. mtgs. “There’s been a big dip in quality of LOST since Top Chef!”

@StacyLibby Top Chef Masters + LOST = Laptop TV Mom is in Heaven!

@americanadian Why does the host of Top Chef look anorexic? Sorry but I don’t trust your judgment on food. Ice chips, maybe.

Daily Show with Jon Stewart

@aaronburcell Will miss Gitmo Elmo after gitmo closes. RT @StacyLibby: Watching the “Gitmo” version of Elmo on The Daily Show. So wrong (and so funny).

@StacyLibby Katie Couric on Jon Stewart… awesome!

@StacyLibby Samantha Bee is freaking hilarious.

The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien

@StacyLibby Conan predicts “YouTube, Twitter and Facebook will merge to form one super time-wasting web site called ‘YouTwitFace‘” #conanobrien

The Next Food Network Star

@StacyLiby Watching “Next Food Network Star” My cooking style is “Calif. meets Midwest” Sushi one day, casseroles the next. All meals w/ wine & friends!

Ted Allen dishes on his new show “Chopped”

Ted Allen's show "Chopped" on Food Network debuts 01/13/09

Ted Allen

Whether you are a fan of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Top Chef or Iron Chef America, you are bound to be a fan of Ted Allen.  I first fell in love with Ted as the smart food and wine connoisseur on Queer Eye, but always felt his talent was better showcased on Top Chef. I thought he added a human element to the often-times pretentious cooking competition. Don’t get me wrong, no one can toss out a multi-syllabic French adjective like Ted Allen, but somehow he doesn’t make you feel insecure when you hear it.

Needless to say, this mom-blogger was excited to be included in a phone interview with Ted to learn about his new show on Food Network called Chopped, which debuts on Tuesday, January 13 at 10 p.m./9 CST. (Set your TiVo now!)  Here’s a recap of the conversation:

Introductions: Before the interview, I asked my friends on Twitter and Facebook if they had any questions for Ted.  Many of my friends recently met (and loved) Ted during Camp Baby, so they asked me to send their regards. So, when it was my turn to ask questions, I began by asking if Ted remembered the ladies from Camp Baby, and his reply was classic: “How could I forget moms let loose without kids and lots of wine?”

About Chopped: Ted Allen hosts a new cooking show called Chopped to find the chef who can cook with creativity, excellence and quick-thinking.  Each episode challenges four budding chefs to create a three-course meal based on three surprise ingredients. After each course is presented and judged, one contestant gets “chopped” until there is one chef standing. Each episode will feature a rotating panel of judges including Alex Guarnaschelli, Aaron Sanchez, and Geoffrey Zakarian who will decide which dishes are the best and award the winner $10k. It’s worth noting that Ted is not a judge for this show, rather he is the host and facilitator.  [It will be interesting to see if he can keep his opinions to himself.  And I mean this in most loving way possible!]

What makes Chopped stand out from other cooking shows? Ted says there is a “realness” to Chopped.  There are so many chefs out there who want a real cooking competition, and “this one is special because of the real feeling.”  Ted promised that we will see “panic, bloodshed and tears” from the chefs who focused on making a good dish out of good ingredients. Ted also said that the three surprise ingredients “don’t go together in an obvious way.” The chefs needs to show creativity and quickness as they only have 30 minutes to think, execute and plate their dishes.

What are Ted’s top three secret ingredients when he cooks? Ted could not keep his list to three, so he listed pork (he talks about pork all the time), cauliflower (roast it until it’s brown on the edges), black beans (great if you are trying to save money, they are cheap and full of protein), and salt (currently the “it ingredient.”)  Of course, the final ingredients Ted cannot live without are butter and Tanqueray.

What staple ingredients should a kitchen never be without? Ted answered this quickly: “You mean other than salt, pepper and oil? A bottle of champagne in the fridge when people pop over. And lots of cheeses and mustard.  I have a mustard fetish. And BACON. Oh my God, you gotta have bacon.”

Any tips for planning a dinner party? Don’t worry about preparing something “fancy and fussy.”  At the end of the day, people really want food that tastes good.  No one will ever turn down a delicious bowl of chili.

Do you have any advice for moms who want to make delicious and healthy dishes but don’t have three hours to cook? Ted said to avoid buying pre-packaged foods and focus on developing cooking skills. He said moms should learn to work with what’s available in the kitchen or foods that are in season. He recommended searching online recipe databases, such as Food Network, Epicurious or Cookstr, to find recipes based on specific foods that are handy when it’s time to cook.  Finally, Ted reminded us “you can’t go wrong with a stir-fry.”

Conclusion: Ted spent another 20 minutes chatting with the bloggers about Food Network, Top Chef and Queer Eye. He was so kind and so gracious. I cannot wait to see the show on Tuesday night! Please tune in and share your comments below!

January 2009 Line-up

Lost returns January 21 on ABC.

Lost returns January 21 on ABC.

I love January for many reasons.  I get to attend a cool New Year’s party, watch college football, enjoy vacation time with my family, and prepare for the new season of television! Here’s a quick list of my must-watch shows starting up in January 2009:

Superstars of Dance = January 4 (I’m not proud of this one, but I will watch with my daughter!)

Biggest Loser Families = January 6 (I always cry when I watch this show, maybe because I watch while sitting on the couch?)

Top Chef = January 7 (It’s a short hiatus, but my favorite cooking show is always welcomed back.)

The Office = January 8 (Michael, Dwight, Jim, Pam and the crew are my favorite characters on TV.)

30 Rock = January 8 (Please welcome Liz Lemon! [said in my best Oprah-voice])

24 = January 11 (Jack is back!)

American Idol = January 13 (Even my 4-year-old daughter knows I love this show. Guilty pleasure.)

Lost = January 21 (It’s about time!)

Big Love = January 18 (I canceled HBO when the Sopranos left the air, time to renew for Bill and the ladies!)

Okay, what is not on my list?  What other shows are Laptop Television-worthy?

In the meantime, does anyone know the start date for Season 6 of Project Runway?  According to Wikipedia, the season wrapped filming on Oct. 17, 2008 and the finalists will show collections at New York Fashion Week in February 2009.  The site also says the first episode of Season 6 will air in January 09… anyone have details?  Reminder that this time we are watching Tim and Heidi on Lifetime TV, not on Bravo.
